Cricket Bat Weight Guide: How Heavy Should Your Bat Be?
Ask ten cricketers what their bat weighs and most will quote a number in pounds and ounces with some pride. Ask them how that weight actually feels when they are late on a quick short ball, and the answer gets more honest. Bat weight is one of the easiest things to get wrong when you buy a bat, and one of the biggest reasons a bat that looked perfect in the shop never quite works in a match.
This guide explains how heavy a cricket bat should be for adults and juniors, the difference between dead weight and pick-up, a simple test you can do at home, and how to choose between a lighter and heavier bat for your game.
How much does a cricket bat weigh?
Most adult cricket bats weigh between about 1,050g and 1,250g, which is roughly 2lb 5oz to 2lb 12oz. Across our own senior range, weights run from 1,050g to around 1,220g. Junior bats are much lighter: our Size 1 to Size 6 bats come in weights from around 420g up to 950g.
| Weight (grams) | Weight (lb and oz) | How it usually feels |
|---|---|---|
| 1,050g | 2lb 5oz | Light. Quick hands, easy to control |
| 1,120g | 2lb 7.5oz | Light to medium. The sweet spot for many club players |
| 1,160g | 2lb 9oz | Medium. A good all-round weight for most adults |
| 1,190g | 2lb 10oz | Medium to heavy. Suits strong players who drive a lot |
| 1,220g and up | 2lb 11oz and up | Heavy. Only for strong, experienced batters |
These are guides, not rules. Two bats of the same weight can feel completely different, which is why the next section matters more than the number.
Dead weight vs pick-up
Dead weight is what the bat weighs on a scale. Pick-up is how heavy it feels in your hands when you lift it into your backlift and swing it. Pick-up depends on where the wood sits in the blade.
- A bat with a higher middle and more wood towards the handle feels lighter than its dead weight, because the balance point is closer to your hands.
- A bat with a low middle puts more wood near the toe. It can feel heavier to pick up, but it carries more power into full-length balls on good pitches.
This is why most CBP bats come in five profiles. VK and HLS have a mid sweet spot and a lighter pick-up, TTS is balanced with an extended sweet spot, and CBP and SRT sit lower for front-foot drivers. If you want a bigger bat that still feels quick, a lighter pick-up profile is usually the answer, not a heavier bat.
A simple test: is this bat too heavy for you?
You can check this at home in under a minute.
- The one-arm hold. Hold the bat by the handle in your top hand only, arm straight out in front of you, for about ten seconds. If the bat drops or your wrist starts shaking, it is too heavy.
- The shadow shot. Play a few forward defences, drives and pulls in front of a mirror. Watch whether the bat comes down straight. A bat that is too heavy tends to swing across the line and drags your head out of position.
- The late shot. Ask someone to call "now" at random and try to bring the bat down as fast as you can. If you are always late, you need a lighter bat or a lighter pick-up.
Light bat or heavy bat: which should you choose?
Choose lighter if you play a lot of back-foot shots, face quick bowling, play on bouncy pitches, bat for long periods, or are still developing your technique. A lighter bat gives you more bat speed and more time. Most coaches would rather see a player with a bat that is slightly too light than one that is too heavy.
Choose heavier if you are strong, play mainly on slower, flatter pitches, drive a lot off the front foot and want the ball to travel further when you connect. Even then, only go heavier if you can still pass the one-arm test comfortably.
When in doubt, go lighter. A bat that arrives on time beats a heavy bat that arrives late.
Bat weight by ball type
Leather ball. An English willow bat is the usual choice. English willow is lighter for its size, so a bat of 1,120g to 1,180g can still carry big edges. Match weight to your strength and the pitches you play on.
Hard tennis ball. Tennis ball cricket is about bat speed and lofted hitting, so most players do best with a slightly lighter bat than they would use for leather ball. A durable Kashmir willow bat is usually the better buy here. Kashmir willow is denser, so the same size bat weighs a little more, which is another reason to pick a lighter option. Junior bat weights
Children should never grow into a bat. A bat that is too heavy forces a cross-bat swing and teaches habits that are hard to unlearn. Choose the size by height first, then the lightest weight available in that size. Our cricket bat size chart explains how to pick the right size by height, and our junior cricket bats come in Size 1 to Size 6.
Does a bat get heavier or lighter over time?
A little. Willow can lose some moisture after a season of use, and a bat may feel slightly lighter. Oiling adds only a tiny amount of weight if you use a light coat on the bare face. Adding a thick rubber grip or a second grip makes the handle heavier and changes the pick-up, so keep that in mind if you like a light-feeling bat.
Cricket bat weight FAQs
1. What is the best cricket bat weight for an adult?
For most adult club players, a bat between about 1,120g and 1,180g (2lb 7oz to 2lb 10oz) is a good starting point. Stronger players may go heavier, and players who face quick bowling often go lighter.
2. Is a heavier bat more powerful?
Only if you can swing it at full speed. Power comes from bat speed and timing as well as mass. A lighter bat swung well will often hit the ball further than a heavy bat swung late.
3. How do I convert bat weight from grams to pounds?
Divide the grams by 28.35 to get ounces, then divide by 16 for pounds. For example, 1,160g is about 40.9oz, or 2lb 9oz.
4. What does pick-up mean?
Pick-up is how heavy the bat feels when you lift and swing it. It depends on the profile and where the middle sits, so two bats of the same dead weight can feel very different.
5. Can I choose the weight of my CBP bat?
Yes. Most of our bats let you choose a weight and a profile on the product page, and we also make fully custom cricket bats to your own spec.
